Mix #9: "I Got A Headache, Throw This On"

I think this is a great mix by Bonzo, except for 2 choices (which I've already told him about)
- Everlast should stick to House Of Pain ONLY
- New Radicals are terrible. I actually really like the chorus but the rest of song makes me want to kill myself. And all I can picture is that dumb video in the mall with the lead singer wearing that dumb fucking hat.
But I kept true to Bonzo's list and included both.

I had never heard 'Seven Shells' by Jason Myles Goss and I think it is a great song. I also really dig the Jonny Lang and Pete Francis tunes. Bonzo has a cool ear for music and this mix just further justifies that.

Mikey has brought me close to peeing my pants many times; whether it be his story about how much he loves baked beans or "OH YEAHHHH," screams, he is hands down in the top 5 funniest people I know. He was also a great baseball player; pitcher to be exact. My last year of little league I gave myself one goal: to not strike out once. I didn't care if I grounded/flew out or walked, I just didn't want to strike out. I struck out once all season. The pitcher was Mikey; that fucking dick struck me out with a change up. Walking back to the bench pissed, I looked briefly at the mound to find Mikey grinning from ear to ear; almost like a "I got you good, you fucker." I couldn't help but laugh to myself. Mikey just as the essence about him that makes you proud to be in the same room with him; That every time he makes you laugh, that joke was intended for you and only you. Whether it was getting stoned in his mom's Grand Marquis, eating all the best Entenman's donuts, and drinking orange soda; or smoking cloves at a concert and hitting on a woman in her late 30's (by yelling 'PINKY' because of her slutty top), Mikey brings a genuine good time.

I always told myself if I was ever in a position to own/run a record label, the first person I would hire is Mikey. The man might not know how to play a note of music, but goddammit he knows good music when he hears it. He's got me into so many bands/artists that it's scary. Even if said band/artist doesn't make it huge, after hearing it, I know exactly why Mikey likes it and why he told me about it; because he knows that I'll like it too. Genre's don't matter to Mikey, which is something I've always respected about him. He's the kind of guy who could listen to "The Format," which may be the pop-iest/depressing lyrical band in the past 10 years and then go on to listen to "311," or "Sublime," or fucking BEETHOVEN! He likes "Coheed and Cambria," but doesn't like "Story Of The Year." These are two bands that could easily be considered similar or genre savvy, but Mikey doesn't hear it. He doesn't like "The Beatles," but respects them. He likes what he likes and isn't afraid to tell you why. And just because he doesn't like something, doesn't mean he doesn't appreciate the attempt. Now if only I could convince him to do stand-up comedy and make millions. Then we could start a record label and take over the world. But I'll still take his free jokes any day of the week.

Mix #4: "We're Loyal, Like Brothers:" The 'Harmony' Mix

This mix was a lot of fun to make. It was my buddy Kenny's idea. He said, "No one harmonizes anymore. The more I listen to Margaritaville on Sirius the more I hate modern music. The Beach Boys? Shitty musicians. Great fuckin singers. I'm making you a harmony mix tape." It made me realize that I also kind of wanted to make a harmony mix, so we collaborated. And here it is: Mix Tape #4: "We're Loyal, Like Brothers:" The 'Harmony' Mix.

Kenny did Side A (or LOYAL)
I did Side B (or BROTHERS)

Enjoy.

Going with the 'Harmony" Mix theme, check out this amazing video I found. I wanted to put Bon Iver on this mix, but I just felt like it didn't mesh well with the vibe I was going for (or I'm completely wrong and full of shit) either way, it's a pretty impressive video.

New mix tomorrow (it's still new and exciting, so it's kind of overload right now)...Sorry (but not really)

I have a great mix coming to you this Friday...another buddy, another great compilation, so stay tuned.

(written on 4/16/10)
I hated Kenny the first time I met him in middle school. We both opted out of 6th grade study so we could take chorus and band. He was better than me in every aspect, so like any kid, I hated him. He was smart and funny. Girls liked him. He got one of the leads in the Wizard Of Oz (fucking lion) in his first year. I had to settle for the coroner of munchkin land. I looked like a Mexican pimp. Jealousy was in full effect and I wanted him to fail (which he didn't) in the worst way. But then I got to know him and realized just how great he really was. By 8th grade, we were best friends. We began dating best friends, so make out parties were in full effect. We had sleepovers where we stayed up late watching softcore porn and eating junk food-within a year, we added screw drivers stolen from his parent's liquor cabinet (funny note: many years later at a party, someone went to make a drink with vodka from the liquor cabinet-the entire bottle was filled with water-Mr. and Mrs. Hulke looked at us, shook their heads, and offered the guest Bacardi instead.) We still laugh about it to this today.

Most nights we would listen to Pearl Jam's "Live On Two Legs," often repeating "Nothing Man," and singing at the top of our lungs. Newbury Comics use to give you samplers when you bought a CD; we would often listen to this too-the key tracks being ICP's "Hall of Illusions," (the EDITED version, which with ICP is like going to a steak house and ordering salad,) and Jimmie's Chicken Shack "High." When Kenny got his license, he would pick me up to go out for a night of cruising. Radiohead's "Kid A," just came out and we both fell in love with it. He had his older brother's ID, so we would stop by a packy, get a 12 pack of Coors and a few packs of cigarettes, and drive around drinking, smoking, talking, rocking, L-I-V-I-N'! As we got older, our drinking continued; along with smoking pot/cigarettes, cocaine, and painkillers. To this day, Kenny and I are both off our preferred drugs, though we still drink and smoke cigarettes. We don't see each other as much as I would like, but we are still very close. He's married to a wonderful girl, a homeowner, and part owner of a jewelry store/engraving business. A few weeks ago, Kenny turned 26 and had a party at his house. We were drunk, broke out the acoustic guitars, and did our best to remember how to play songs/lyrics/etc; The furthest we got with a song was "Nothingman." Like our friendship, things will change, but our bond will remain.

This mix was contributed by my buddy Sean. I just listened to this mix again and it is really good. Sean has great taste in music and it shows in this mix. Enjoy and leave Sean some love in the comments.

I'll have a fun, nostaligic, quick mix ready for tomorrow, but expect a new, great mix on Wednesday morning.

(written on 4/16/10)
Sean is one of the most fun loving guys I know. He always has been. We played baseball together forever. He is the best all around athlete I know; if you don't believe me, watch him hit a fucking baseball and just hope it's not a line drive at your head. In 7th grade, Sean's sister Megan was diagnosed with cancer. His parents spent a lot of time at the hospital with her, so my parents kind of took Sean in. He would sleep over on school nights and the next morning we would walk to school together. It was great, despite the circumstances. We would walk home from a boring day of school to find my mom baking cookies, brownies, etc; When Megan got better and he stopped staying over, mom rarely baked. Thanks Sean for stunting my bakery needs. Many nights we would play ping pong and listen to Ozzy Osbourne albums. That, or play basketball in my bedroom, which made the ceiling sound like it was caving in. On any given week, Sean and I would switch girlfriends. We were young and stupid, but it worked for us. Our attention spans were as short as our chin hairs. That working only made our bond stronger.

Sean always had an interesting taste in music. He liked hard music like Metallica and Black Sabbath, but as time progressed, he began to shock me (in a good way) with some of his choices. Supertramp was always a band I knew of, but never paid close attention too. Sean made me pay attention to them. They were strange, but catchy. Classical but rock. He also got me into one of my now favorite bands/artists: Citizen Cope. A year or two ago, we went up, with our ladies, to Hampton Beach to see Cope. The ladies met us up there; I picked up Sean in the afternoon at work and we drove up together. Traffic was terrible, but we smoked cigarettes and took turns playing songs off my iPod. We talked about life how it was affecting us; in a little over a year, Sean and his beautiful fiance Sara would be married. And a house would follow. This was the first time I realized we weren't kids anymore; we were growing up, which scared me, but made Sean excited. Seeing him excited about the future made me excited. When we finally got to Hampton, and our beautiful lodging, the one and only Riviera Motor Inn, we began drinking and laughing, and enjoying great music at the Hampton Ball Room. The trip was not ideal: the mattresses were held together with duct tape. At breakfast the next morning, the sweatiest waiter ever dropped cranberry and vodka all over me. The ride back was good because I knew we would be seeing all our friends that afternoon for the Braintree 4th of July party at the Hulke Complex, similar to Kennedy's, but not as lame. But it is a great story I will always cherish. And the drinks that were spilled on me and the following round were free. Doesn't make up for the rooms, but still a great way to wind down the trip with one of my best friends.

We Had It All To Ourselves

Mark O'Sullivan Music

My good friend Mark, born and raised in Braintree but now residing in Hawaii, has added 4 new songs to his MySpace page. We played together for years and every time I hear his new music, it brings me back to fond memories of always being on his right side on a floor, stage, deck, etc; Check it out, his words are truly beautiful.
