Two For Friday: Mixes #14 & #15

MIX #14: "FRENCH FRIES AND OREOS"

- Mieka Pauley is amazing. I saw her open for Jeffrey Gaines a month ago. She opened with the included tune 'Marked Man,' and it gave me goosebumps. It also made me pay attention and enjoy the rest of her set.
- Autopilot Off were a great pop punk band. Fun fact: their original name was Cooter, which I find hilarious.
- NOFX has a tendency to make people very uncomfortable and I love it. 'You're Wrong,' is the perfect example of these punk rock veterans not giving a shit about anything. Still don't believe me? Watch this.
- I am really digging the new The Get Up Kids album, 'There Are Rules.' They've grown and their sound has changed a bit, but they still make good pop music.

MIX #15: "BACK TO BASICS"

This mix is entirely made of acoustic tunes, which I thought it would be easier than it was. The original formula was:
1) Full band songs stripped down to acoustic instruments (which I did)
2) No cover songs (which I did)
3) Studio versions (which I didn't)
4) Chill songs for sleep, work, studying, etc; (which I didn't) but it still has a pretty relaxed feel.

The highlights of this mix:
- Martin Sexton's solo version of 'There Go I.' The man is amazing-he makes it seems like an orchestra and chorus are on stage with him.
- Anthony Green's voice on Saosin's 'Seven Years.' Even when his voice stretches and cracks at some of the high notes, you can tell it's real and that it's haunting.
- Pearl Jam cracks me up; they play hard and fast even when they're using acoustic instruments. God love them. I think it was a subtle 'Fuck You,' to MTV.
- I actually prefer the acoustic version of John Mayer's 'Slow Dancing In A Burning Room.' It just seems a little more personal.
